If I told you that there are 12 eggs per `carton`,

then the expression
12C would represent the total number of eggs.
But then clearly C can't be the total, right?

C is the number of cartons,
12 eggs per carton, times the number of cartons,
gives us the total number of eggs in all of those cartons.
