The Mid Atlantic Ridge has a half-spreading rate of about 25 mm/year. How long would it take for rock at the boundary of the plates (new rock just formed at the center of the ridge) to be 1 km apart, if the only factor was plate spreading

Well, since the metric system converts very nicely by simply moving a decimal point, let's convert 1mm into Km.... 1mm is .001m. 1 Km is 1000m. So, 25mm is equal to .000025Km. In the metric system, it's almost always easiest to convert from a lower unit of measurement to the standard meter, then up to the larger unit. Now we can divide the distance we need, 1Km, by the amount of spreading per year, .000025Km/year. If you keep units in mind when you perform calculations, you can cancel them out like like terms... So, \[1Km \div .000025Km/Year= 40,000 years\]
