Can anyone explain the point of a wronskian determinant, and why it is found when doing systems?

OpenStudy (anonymous):

determines whether the set of solutions to the DE are independent. If the determinant of the wronskian is =0 then they are independent (not vice versa). if they are we can form a basis with which to build all other solutions to the DE.

Ok thanks for the help. These systems are really confusing me
