If a vertical line can intercept the graph of a relation more than once, is the relation a function?

OpenStudy (anonymous):

First of all a function is a relation, but their are many relations that aren't funcitons ( a function is one type of relation). I don't know if they explained this to you yet. A function ties one peice of information to another. When we plug in an X value into a function we get a Y value so we can say that Y is a function of X by giving us that value. For example say I am at home and want to get to the supermarket. The roads that I take are a function I used that tie me to the supermarket. Well for your problem let me use my example. So I am trying to get to the supermarket. If I were to somehow end up at two supermarkets at the same time it would be impossible. But say it is possible and that is what the roads tie me to at the end product. The roads DON'T FUNCTION for just one supermarket, the only one that I wanted to go to. So if there are more than one Y value (or supermarket) for one X Value (Me) then it is not a function. So if the vertical line test (what they tell you happened) shows that there are two Y values for one X value then the graph of the relation is not a function.

so the relation wont b a function?

OpenStudy (anonymous):

in this case?

OpenStudy (anonymous):

The relation is not a function. A function can only have one Y value for one X value. Sorry if I confused you with my example.
