Same idea as someone being in debt. I do only have $100, yet I owe you $200. Does that mean I only have to pay you $100 in the end since there is no negative bills?

Or take velocity as another example: velocity accounts for both speed and direction. So if I drive 45 mph north will my velocity be the same if I drive 45mph south? No, since direction needs to be accounted for. Therefore, if I want the direction north to be the positive direction then while driving north I will have 45mph as my velocity, yet when I am going the opposite direction I will have -45mph as my velocity.
