what is the square route of -81?

OpenStudy (anonymous):

negative numbers dont have a square root because two numbers can not be multiplied toget to get a negative. for example the square root of 81 is 9 because 9*9 is 81, but -81 doesnt work that way. 9*9=81 as well as -9*-9 also equals 81. In this way the square root of 81 is both positive and negative 9

The square route of -81is -9. Right?

OpenStudy (anonymous):

no. -9*-9= 81 not -81

OpenStudy (anonymous):

that's wrong actually, sqrt(-81) = 9sqrt(-1) = 9i
