my daughter is adding fractions with not the same denominators

OpenStudy (oaktree):

If you are adding 1/2 + 3/4, you find the number that both go into (4, in this case) and then multiply each to reach that denominator. So, you'd do 1/2 x 2/2 (you can do this b/c 2/2 = 1) which gives you 2/4. Then add 2/4 and 3/4 to get 5/4.
