So there are mushrooms on 1/3 of the pizza and peppers on 5/8 of the pizza.
First find a common denominator.

what times 3 will get you 24?
Take that number and multiply it by both the numerator and the denominator:
1(8)/3(8) = 8/24

What times 8 will get you 24?
5(3)/8(3) = 15/24

So which fraction is bigger? 8/24 or 15/24 ?
