OpenStudy (dawn):

how would you subtracted 8 2/3 -2 5/6?

OpenStudy (anonymous):

First let's make them "top heavy" fractions 8 (2/3) will become 26/3 -2(5/6) will become -17/6

OpenStudy (anonymous):

now your equation should look like this: 26/3-17/6 You need to find a common denominator which is 6 in this case 52/6-17/6

OpenStudy (dawn):

oh ok, make them into an improper fraction? so is the answer 9 5/6

OpenStudy (anonymous):

Not quite now you just do simple subtraction 52-17=35 35/6 or 5 (5/6) make sense?

OpenStudy (dawn):

yes, the 5/6 makes sense..but what do u do with the 5 from making the improper fraction into a proper fraction

OpenStudy (dawn):

sorry been a long time since i have been in school, im trying to help my 5th grader

OpenStudy (anonymous):

ok well basically I said how many times does 6 gointo 35 5(6)=30 35-30=5 so your answer is 5(5/6)

OpenStudy (dawn):

ok, I get it now..not sure what I was doing..mixing up addition with subtraction, thank you so very much.

OpenStudy (anonymous):

No problem:)
