Simplify [ ( ½)2 – ( ¼ )3 ] x 23

OpenStudy (anonymous):

Hello

OpenStudy (anonymous):

Can you think of any ways you can shorten this problem? That is what they are asking for when they say simplify.

OpenStudy (anonymous):

HI, I have no idea..

OpenStudy (anonymous):

Alright, well let's look at this thing: ( ( ½)2 – ( ¼ )3 ) x 23 Now, if it were up to you, would you rather multiply two by half and subtract a quarter of 3, or would you rather just have 1 - 3/4?

OpenStudy (anonymous):

Um.. Let's just ignore what I said before.

OpenStudy (anonymous):

Here, they want you to simplify an expression. The simplest thing we could possibly have for this problem is a single number, is that correct?

Would you rather have one easy number or a long phrase? Suppose I wanted to tell you to got to the store and buy one egg. Would you rather have me ask you to get one egg or to get a fourth of four eggs?
