how do you solve 20 4/9 - 8/9, this is 5th grade math and its killing me, thanks

OpenStudy (anonymous):

multiply 20 * 4/9 yields 80/9 hence: 80/9 - 8/9 = 72/9 The 20 4/9 notation can be confusing. Read it as 20 whole units and a fraction. Thus you have to convert the whole units into the same type of fraction as the 4/9. Hence why you multiply 20 * 4/9.
