I'm doing problem set 1. Do I need to use the stuff that was taught in the first two lectures alone, or I can use the help of say..lists?

If you use extra techniques not from the first two lectures, your TA may lower your grade on this assignment.*

The problem set was designed to be turned in at the third lecture, so it can definitely be done with just the first two lectures.

But the main purpose of the assignments is for students with limited programming experience to get practice writing programs . If you have more knowledge/experience, and still want to go through this class, I don't see why you shouldn't use it.

* No you aren't being graded. Do whatever works for you.

Thank you for your answer. I just wanted to make sure that in a real assignment scenario, TA won't lower my grades on the grounds of bloated code. (Because I have to stick to the things that was taught in first two lectures.)
