multiple the top and bottom of the fraction so that you have the same number in the denominator (number on bottom of fraction), then add and subtract top with top and bottom with bottom

So for your question y ou'd multiple 1/2 by 2 on the top and 2 on the bottom so it's 2/4. Then adding 3/4 to 2/4 you get 5/4
