I'm looking for the formula for lengths: my problem how to set up & solve: a machinist attached a piece of metal 5/8 in long with a piece 3/4 in long. He then had to sheer off a piece 3/16in long. What is the length of remaining metal?

(first piece length) + (second piece length) - (cut off length)

(3/4) + (5/8) - (3/16) = ?

Put them all in the same pants in order to add them up :)

(3*4/16) + (5*2/16) - (3/16) = ?
(12/16) + (10/16) - (3/16) = 19/16

19/16 cant be made smaller so thats the answer
