You have an expression, not an equation. Equations have equal signs. You can solve an equation, but you can only SIMPLIFY an expression. To simplify your expression, you would use the Distributive Property of Multiplication over Addition, also called Clearing Parentheses. Multiplying the (-2) times both the (x) and the (-3) and then the (-4) times both the (2x) and the (+1) yields -2x+6-8x-4-x Then, combining LIKE terms, you have -11x+2 Simplified, not solved.
