what is the formula for lateral area?

OpenStudy (anonymous):

That depends on the solid. For a cylinder, the lateral surface area is the height of the cylinder times the circumference of the base circle.

oops! sorry its for a rectangular prism!

OpenStudy (anonymous):

In this case, it's just the area of each of the 4 rectangles along the sides of the prism. if the prism is h units tall, l units long, and w units wide, the lateral surface area is 2h*(l+w)
