Radical -16 can be separated to radical -1 * radical 16. Square root of a negative is imaginary. We define radical -1 as i. i = radical -1. So the standard form is 4i since i represents the negative in radical 16, and 4 is the square root of the remaining 16. Radical -1 * radical 16 is i * 4 = 4i -- as twhitelsu stated above.
