HOW TO FIND THE GCF OF 48 AND 72?

OpenStudy (anonymous):

is this for a number theory or modern algebra course?

OpenStudy (anonymous):

WE CAN DO IT BY NUMBER THEORY METHOD. ONE WAY IS: SUBTRACT THE GREATER NO. BY THE SMALLER ONE . IN THIS CASE IT IS 72-48. WHICH GIVES US 24. NOW THE NEW GREATER NO. BECOMES 48 (AS 72 HAS ALREADY BEEN REDUCED TO 24). SO SUBTRACT 24 FROM 48 i.e. 48 -24 WHICH GIVES US 24. AS BOTH THE NUMBERS HAVE BEEN REDUCED TO THE SAME VALUE WE GET THE GCF AS 24.
