Here is the problem: A man starts walking North 4ft/s from point P. 5 minutes later a woman starts walking South at 5ft/s from a point 500ft due East of P. At what rate are the people moving apart 15 minutes after the woman starts walking?

xavvy, identify first the requirement and all the subjects involved then, figure out if they are changing with respect to time. Next, make an equation that relates all the subject you identify and derive it implicitly with respect to time. Substitute the values and you get the answer. :)
