Factor 3a ^{2} -24ab+48b ^{2}

OpenStudy (anonymous):

do u know how to use the box/foil method?

OpenStudy (anonymous):

kind of

OpenStudy (anonymous):

ok well u can put it in the box thingy, what can u multiply to get 3a^2?

OpenStudy (anonymous):

ummm...3and 2???

OpenStudy (anonymous):

u multiply 3a times a to get 3a^2

OpenStudy (anonymous):

oh ok thenwhat happens to the rest of the variables??

OpenStudy (anonymous):

ok, so u have 24ab, now u need to find 2 numbers that will get u 24 when u add them and 48 when u multiply them

OpenStudy (anonymous):

6 and 4 eqaul 24ab

OpenStudy (anonymous):

and 8 and 6

OpenStudy (anonymous):

did u draw the box lol, we have to be careful bc there is a 3, i dont really know how to explain how i drew the box xD

OpenStudy (anonymous):

dont you use a factor diamond then you use the FOIL method?

OpenStudy (anonymous):

Would this be the factored form (3a-8b)(a-6b)

OpenStudy (anonymous):

?

OpenStudy (anonymous):

not exactly, if u give me a min ill try to figure it out :)

OpenStudy (anonymous):

whats a min?

OpenStudy (anonymous):

minute

OpenStudy (anonymous):

oh ok go ahead. lol

OpenStudy (anonymous):

I have the possible answers: A.(3a-8b)(a-6b) B.(3a-16b)(a-3b) C.3(a-4b)(a-4b) D.3(a-8b)(a-8b)

OpenStudy (anonymous):

i think its c :)

OpenStudy (anonymous):

u pull out the 3, then u r left with (a^2 -8ab+16b^2), when u simplify that even more, u get (a-4b)(a-4b) , 4+4=8, 4*4=16. I hope it helps :)

OpenStudy (anonymous):

ok thankx
