How did Columbus describe his discovery of the New World?

He seems to describe the people as simple, so I sense a superiority complex, possibly totally underestimating the human potential and maintaining his westernized/european stance

Well, I read some brief outtakes of his journals, and what I gathered from it was that he that the land was rich and fertile. There were plenty of resources and he was eager to explore it. However, the people he encountered were described as savages; animals in human form.
