I'm assuming by 5 1/9 you mean 5 and one 9th. In that case 5 and one 9th can be rewritten as 5 + 1/9. Rewriting your whole expression yields: 5+1/9 - (1+4/9) = (5-1) + (1/9 - 4/9) = 4 - 3/9 = 4 - 1/3 = 12/3 - 1/3 = 11/3 = 9/3 + 2/3 = 3 + 2/3 = 3 and two 3rds = 3 2/3
