if a tree falls in the forest does it make noise?

OpenStudy (anonymous):

No, because the definition of sound is "something that you hear." No one's there to hear the tree fall, so the tree doesn't make a sound. This answer is valid as long as no details are observed technically.

lol very nice

OpenStudy (anonymous):

Well, the real definition of sound is "a mechanical wave of oscillating pressure through a medium that has a source, a medium through which the wave propagates, and a receiver." If there's nobody to hear it, there is no receiver, and hence no sound. :D Just backing up loco85.
