What does the inverse of a function tell you?

OpenStudy (anonymous):

The inverse function allows you to 'undo' a function.

OpenStudy (anonymous):

f(g(x)) = g(f(x)) = x like that?

OpenStudy (anonymous):

yes

OpenStudy (anonymous):

but taking the inverse of a function have any real life applications?

OpenStudy (anonymous):

Yes.

OpenStudy (anonymous):

Mostly in trig from what I've discovered.

OpenStudy (anonymous):

inverse function are also symmetrical about y = x

Inverse function are important in physics. for example, you have a velocity vs/ time graph and you want to know the speed of a car at any time. The inverse function tells the opposite. it tells you the time when the car is at a certain velocity. In other woulds, the x and y axis are switched or the independent and dependent variables are switched.
