write an equation is standard form of the line passing through the give pair of points. The line goes through the points (5,2) and (5,4). What is the equation of the line?

OpenStudy (anonymous):

The general eq'n of a line is. \[y = mx + b;\]

OpenStudy (anonymous):

Now we find slope by taking the change in y/change in x \[m= \frac{\Delta y}{\Delta x} = \frac{y2 - y1}{x2 - x1}\]

OpenStudy (anonymous):

y2 = 4, y1 = 2 x2 = 5, y2 = 5

OpenStudy (anonymous):

m=0

OpenStudy (anonymous):

Whoa oh slope is undefined

OpenStudy (anonymous):

yes that's I found out :D

OpenStudy (anonymous):

m is not 0

OpenStudy (anonymous):

hmm than that's where I am making mistake huh

OpenStudy (anonymous):

if it was zero it would be flat. if its undefined it is vertical

OpenStudy (anonymous):

but when you evaluate the equation for M what would you get? y2-y1 / x2-y2 which comes to 2/0..?

OpenStudy (anonymous):

divide by 0 = undefined, not 0 :)

OpenStudy (anonymous):

Yep and you can't divide by zero because the word will explode

OpenStudy (anonymous):

yes :D

OpenStudy (anonymous):

so the answer would be x=5...

OpenStudy (anonymous):

yes!

OpenStudy (anonymous):

Just a vertical line.
