The simplest inverter (NOT gate) can be constructed from devices like: MOSFET, rezistor and DC voltage source connected in series. Take drain source-voltage Vds of MOSFET as output and gate-source voltage Vgs as input. In the example I'll use the simplest model of MOSFET - switch model. When the Vgs > V threshold (logic one on input), the MOSFET is on and point in which you measure Vds is short circuited with the ground (you will get zero output voltage, logic 0). If Vgs < Vt (logic 0 on input) the MOSFET is off, switch is opened and Vds = V source (logic 1)
