So, imagine you have a cylinder, and you slice it parallel to the base at any point along the length. What you see is a circle. That is the cross-sectional area. If you slice a rectangular prism anywhere parallel to one side, the what you see when you split it open is going to be the same area as that side you were parallel to - this new side to which you open up is the cross-section.
