can someone show me how to find the greatest common factor i dont get it?

lets say that you need to find the gfc in 16 and 24
16: 2x2x2x2
24:2x2x2x3
what numbers do they have in common?
2x2x2=8 gfc: 8

or you could list the factors of it like this say you have 16 and 24 16=(1,2,4,4, 8,16) 25= (1,2,3,4,6 ,8,12,24) Now you would see what would be the largest number that they have in common.
