My father bought many iterms at a store that was going out of business. He bought two picture frames, four baskets for my mother, and a super - sized bag of jolly ranchers. My sister and I each ate 1/4 of the total candies in the bag and there were still 40 left. How many candies were originally in the bag??

OpenStudy (anonymous):

1/4 * x = 40 x = 40*4 x=160

OpenStudy (anonymous):

thats worng

OpenStudy (anonymous):

wrong*

OpenStudy (anonymous):

thank you very much for your help

OpenStudy (anonymous):

sorry if am wrong

OpenStudy (anonymous):

and it wasn't 1/4 for each one??? in total 2/4??

OpenStudy (anonymous):

well 40 more candies were left right? so that means 40 must equal 3/4

OpenStudy (anonymous):

so the question is, what times 3 equals 40

OpenStudy (anonymous):

u there

OpenStudy (anonymous):

yes

OpenStudy (anonymous):

Im sorry a little slow

OpenStudy (anonymous):

so how could you solve the problem

OpenStudy (anonymous):

ur right, missread each one 1/4, so 2/4=1/2, the answer is 80

OpenStudy (anonymous):

they ask me to show how to solve the problem

OpenStudy (anonymous):

1/4 + 1/4 = 2/4 = 1/2 40 : 1/2 = 40 * 2 = 80

OpenStudy (anonymous):

ohhhhh !!! thank you so much this is for my son because he's having a lot of trouble in math and I didn't know how to solve the problem

OpenStudy (anonymous):
