Is it necessary to be good at math in order to become a professional computer scientist?

There's actually been a lot of debate about that among educators. It certainly doesn't hurt to be good at math, but even if you aren't, you should still be able to make it with the right amount of effort.

The most important thing is to have a deep understanding of Algorithms. http://www.amazon.com/Introduction-Algorithms-Third-Thomas-Cormen/dp/0262033844/ref=sr_1_1?ie=UTF8&qid=1301804479&sr=8-1 is an excellent start. It is heavy though.
