A marathoner ran the 26.2 mile New York City marathon in 2.7 hours. Did the runner ever exceed a speed of 9 miles per hour? Please show work

OpenStudy (amistre64):

in order to run 26.2 miles in 2.7 hours; you would need a constant speed of 26.2/2.7 = 9.7 mph. I would say that yes, he had to exceed 9 mph at some point. But my math might be off :)
