In calculus, how do I know when to use the disk method, or when to use the cylinder method?

Well, it's a function of experience and trial-and-error, unfortunately. If you set up your volume elements using each method, you can see (usually) which will be easier to integrate.

Usually its one of the either that will make the problem simple i would imagine...tho you could use both for any problem, aslong as you set it to the correct respect of the y or x axis. Usually Disc is when your trying to solve for x-axis and shell for y-axis.

If you have 2 graphs, cylindrical shell is much easier ^_^
