Hey I just watched lecture 5 will I ever need to do binary floating point by hand or do I just need to understand how it works.

It is highly unlikely that you'll ever want or need to do it manually.

Ok good because I understand how they figure it out but it looks really annoying to do yourself.

It is important to understand the nuances as stated incase you ever run into an issues. Also you would want to know if you wrote your own programming language ;)
