what is meant by span of vectors?

OpenStudy (anonymous):

Let W be a finite subspace of a vector space, V over a a field, K \[W=\left\{ v_1,v_2,...,v_n \right\}\]The span of W is \[span(W)=\left\{ \lambda_1 v_1 + \lambda_2 v_2+...+ \lambda_n v_n | \lambda_1, \lambda_2,...,\lambda_n \in K\right\}\]

OpenStudy (anonymous):

Should have said W is a finite *subset*.

Usually, the scalar field is real or complex, and the span is just the set of all linear combinations possible.

Is that okay?
