What is the coefficient of the fifth term in the expansion of (x+1)^8 ?

OpenStudy (amistre64):

youd have to expand it out to tell, unless someone knows a shortcut :)

OpenStudy (amistre64):

i might know a short cut......

OpenStudy (amistre64):

the binomial therum or some such name...... pascals triangle

OpenStudy (amistre64):

1 11 121 1331 14641 1 5 10 10 5 1 that stuff

OpenStudy (anonymous):

i don't know pascals triangle

OpenStudy (amistre64):

11^8 would work too :)

OpenStudy (anonymous):

how did you get the 11?

OpenStudy (anonymous):

i'm so confused!

OpenStudy (amistre64):

pascals triangle follow a pattern of the powers of 11 11^2 is the quadratic cooeficients 1 2 1 11^3 is the cubics cooefficients..1 3 3 1 and so on 11^8 = 214358881 but I have to pick it out into the right pattern

OpenStudy (amistre64):

1 11 121 1331 14641 15101051 1 6 15 20 15 6 1 1 7 21 35 35 21 7 1 1 8 28 56 70 56 28 8 1 the 5th cooeficient will be 70

OpenStudy (amistre64):

in fact this is all the cooefficients :)

OpenStudy (anonymous):

use Pascals Triangle to find out the fifth coeficent

OpenStudy (amistre64):

good answer :)
