a. one x=3 and y=5 Solve the first equation for y in terms of x and plug the result into the second equation and solve it for the numerical value of x. Then replace x in the first equation with 3 and solve it for y. Check your answers by replacing the numerical values for x and y in each of the equations. In each case the number on the left side should equal the number on the right side.
