Can anyone give a example of a real world "piecewise function"?

OpenStudy (amistre64):

suppose there is condition were the "graph" of a function changes with respect to its input variable..... then on each side of that input variable, we would have different equations to match the indicated results... real world example?..dunno off hand

OpenStudy (amistre64):

suppose you are gathering data the resembles a graph: y = x+6. but you find that at x=9 the value is not cinsistent... you would have to define another "equation" for that value. f(x) = x+6, for all values of x except for 9; and f(x) = -6 when x = 9....something like that

Thank you.
