A rectangular prism has a rectangle on each of the bases and then rectangles connecting those bases. You find the area of the base and then multiply that by 2 because you have two bases the same size. You then find the area of one of the rectangles between the 2 bases and multiply that by 4 because you have 4 rectangles of the same size.. Then you add those two numbers and you have your answer
