How do you know which function to be the right or left function when trying to figure out the area of the function?

if the answer is negative, you have them backwards :) like this:

8-6 = 2 ; thats a good answer

6-8 = -2 ; its a negative, but the absolute value is the same. just chop off the negative. Or switch you functions around :)
