A furniture dealer sold a desk and a chair for $640. If the desk sold for $40 more than four times the price of the chair, what was the price of the chair?

OpenStudy (anonymous):

4x+40 =640

OpenStudy (anonymous):

i keep getting 520

OpenStudy (anonymous):

suppose the price of the chair was P, then the price of the desk was 4 times P + $40, correct, so the price of the desk is 4P+40. Both the desk and chair were sold for 640 so P+4P+40 = 640 or 5P =600, P = 120.
