Why is it so difficult to understand the first lesson? I can follow the exercises, merely by copying what they say to do, but the instructions of where to look raw input and input just do not make coherent sense to me.

According to me there is no need ryt now to look for raw_input and input, just remember that raw_input is used to ask user to input through keyboard and store it if u want to.
It follows the following syntax.
variable_name=raw_input('Some text ')

this is so basic, but okay, i have no shame:  when the command said enter your first name... then am i to put print("Enter first name")
is that raw input?
