(x + 2) (x-9)

OpenStudy (anonymous):

=x^2-7x-18

OpenStudy (anonymous):

is this equal to something?

OpenStudy (anonymous):

or are you just told to multiply the facts to give an expression?

OpenStudy (anonymous):

multiply the facts to give an expression.

OpenStudy (anonymous):

done

OpenStudy (anonymous):

what does ^ mean?

OpenStudy (anonymous):

raised to the power.

OpenStudy (anonymous):

oh okay, thanks.

OpenStudy (anonymous):

did you understand what Maph did there though?

OpenStudy (anonymous):

9 x 2 = 18 but i'm not sure how Maph got the 7

OpenStudy (anonymous):

remeber when doing a problem like that to use foil (first, outside, inside, last) then combine like terms to end up with the answer

OpenStudy (anonymous):

thanks zbay.

OpenStudy (anonymous):

okay, multiply the two terms and note that (a+b)*(c+d)= a(c+d) +b(c+d) = ac+ad+bc+bd so, (x+2)(x-9) = (x*x +2x-9x-18) = x^2-7x+18 (since 2x-9x = -7x)

OpenStudy (anonymous):

whoops, that is -18 at the end there.
