How is factoring is used to solve quadratic equations?

OpenStudy (amistre64):

when we factor quads, it tends to give us 2 equations to solve: (x+__)(x-___) right?

OpenStudy (amistre64):

we know that zero times any number = 0

OpenStudy (anonymous):

it leads to the zero product property that says if ab = 0 then either a = 0 or b =0, thus we can find solutions to the quadratic.

OpenStudy (amistre64):

so there are 2 possible solutions the left can be made zero OR the right can be made zero and both values will be a valid solution

OpenStudy (anonymous):

thank you that makes sense

OpenStudy (amistre64):

youre welcome :)
