Find the foci for the ellipse 25x^2 + 4y^2 = 100?

OpenStudy (anonymous):

Basically i need to convert it to the form \[x^2 / a^2 + y^2 / b^2 = c\]

OpenStudy (anonymous):

yes, so divide both sides by 100 and post what you got.

OpenStudy (anonymous):

I get it. So it's \[x^2 / 4 + y^2 / 25 = 1\] (: I just wasn't sure, because all three are square numbers so it looked like i had to do something with square roots...

OpenStudy (anonymous):

yup, so what are a,b and c?

OpenStudy (anonymous):

you figured it out, right?

OpenStudy (anonymous):

yup! All good!! (: a=2, b=5, c=1

OpenStudy (anonymous):

well the actual c value is root29. but my c in the equation is 1, and it has to be 1 anyway. O_o

OpenStudy (anonymous):

actually, a= +2 and -2 b = +5 and -5

OpenStudy (anonymous):

well yeah... i always ignore the +/- by accident. :P thank you!
