Factor x2 + 6x + 5

OpenStudy (anonymous):

y=(x+5)(x+1)

OpenStudy (anonymous):

just think of it as two numbers that times to make 5 and also add to make 6 then put them in to the brackets..so 1x5=5, 1+5=6

OpenStudy (anonymous):

yea thats waht i got to

OpenStudy (anonymous):

(x + 1 )(x - 5)

OpenStudy (anonymous):

is that right

OpenStudy (anonymous):

no it would both be plus (x+1)(x+5) or (x+5)(x+1)

OpenStudy (anonymous):

can you help me with someone , im not that good at this

OpenStudy (anonymous):

yea

OpenStudy (anonymous):

x2 – 19x + 84 = 0

OpenStudy (anonymous):

(x-7)(x+12) You want two numbers that multiple to get the constant term, or 84 in this specific example. AND they also need to add up to the coefficient in the middle term, in this case -19. The two numbers -7 and +12 do exactly that, so it factors that way.
