Because you have x's on both sides, get rid of your smallest x which happens to be x in this problem. 3x - x + 3 = x - x - 5 (I subtracted x from both sides) 2x + 3 = -5 I added like terms 2x + 3 - 3 = -5 - 3 I subtracted 3 from both sides 2x = -8 divide both sides by 2 x = -4
