I need help/explanantion in solving these problems using elimination? 1) 4x+y= -23 x-2y= -17 2) 4x+3y=-1 2x+5y=3

OpenStudy (anonymous):

first you need to make 2 of the varilbles oppisit inverses

OpenStudy (anonymous):

Combine the upper and lower function

OpenStudy (anonymous):

Solve for the varible

OpenStudy (anonymous):

? How would I go about doing that?

OpenStudy (anonymous):

ok for the first one i would multiply the top function by 2 giving you a positive 2y and a -2y, after we have done that you are going to combine the top and bottom function resulting in the 'y' varrible canceling out

the function that remains is going to be 5x=-40. when we solve for x we get -8
