need help with steps in solving this equation

\[\sqrt{6+8}-2=x\]
I know the answer is 1, I just am not sure of the steps to get there. I squared the radical and the 2=x..
i don't see how the answer would be one...
in the answer part of my text book it says x=1
are you solving for x? i don't think you can do this without a calculator. the simplest form for this would be \[\sqrt{14} - 2\]

which comes out to be 1.74165739
in the answer portion of my textbook it says x=1
