what are the x-intercepts and mininum point(s) for the equation x^2+8x+16
Do you know how to factor?
kinda
That is how you find the x-intercepts. You are wanting factors of 16 that add to get 8 1 * 16 ? 2 * 8 ? 4 * 4? which one?
4 and 4????
Good so it factors into (x + 4)(x + 4)
So you take each of those and solve for each of them = 0 x + 4 = 0 (since they are both the same you only do this once) x = -4 so this graph only touches the x-axis at -4
If your x^2 term is positive then the graph opens upward and you have a minimum if your x^2 term is negative then the graph opens downward and you have a maximum
Since the x^2 term is positive it opens upward... since it only crosses one time on the x-axis, it MUST be the minimum (-4,0)
