A canoeist paddles 27 miles upstream against the current . The current is 2 mph and he is paddling 5 mph. It would take him ???? hours to complete this upstream journey

OpenStudy (anonymous):

His effective speed is 3 mph. (His speed - resistance) -->(5-2=3) therefore, to go 27 miles divide the distance by the speed. 27/3=9. 9 Hours.

The current is holding him back so even tho he is paddling 5 mph the current is taking away 2 mph so he is only gaining 3 mph d = rt 27 = 3t t = 9 hours

..thanks!!
